the thing about family photography (at least the way i approach it) is that you are forced to abandon nearly all the basic principles one would look for in an “ideal” shoot: perfect light, nice posing, straight lines, some sense of control, a plan…not to say that those won’t line up at some point, but with young children, you just can’t expect that they will. so what you’re left with is your camera (and the knowledge of how to use it), your instincts, your subjects and inevitably your sense of humor because if you’re like me, you’re going to end up in some awkward/potentially humiliating positions and you’re going to need to know how to laugh that off and keep going.
the beauty in all of that is that without the control, you are gifted with some of the most incredibly raw moments, with movement and play, with genuine emotion and interaction that you could never force or pose. and yeah, the horizon might not be straight because i was in the process of being attacked in a leaf fight and yeah the focus might be a little soft because mom was laughing as she tipped her son upside down and yeah they might be squinting a bit because they were busy spotting seagulls, but man do i FEEL it. these are the images i want to create for you. see more of this lovely family and their youngest’s birth story here!

you may recognize these folks from the many milestones i’ve been able to document in their lives. amber and bonner are servants – they are constantly caring for and loving others. it was such an honor to be able to serve them for once!

spring break: bringing shrieks of joy…or pain across the nation. i love my kids. i really really do. and i like the idea of spring break. the reality of spring break, though, can be less than ideal, especially with young kids. the ideal: let them stay up late for popcorn and a movie as a treat so that they will sleep in the next morning. the reality: they stay up late and whine when they have to go to bed, even when it’s an hour past their regular bedtime. the next morning they are up even earlier than usual, are grumpy, fight with each other nonstop and shoot you death glares when you suggest an afternoon “quiet time”.
so even though we didn’t have big plans to go away this year, we threw together a last minute one night “staycation”. i googled hotels within a 2 hour drive that had a waterslide. squamish, here.we.come.
another family showed up after we had been there a few minutes, so i put my camera away so that i didn’t look like a creepazoid. but i could have shot inside there all day.on our way home, following google maps, i looked for the road that cut closest to the water and we ended up here. thanks google! this post is a part of april’s edition of childhood unplugged…head over here to check out the other amazing women who are a part of this fun project!
a couple of polaroids from our little advenutre:

i was so conflicted about how to encapsulate an entire year of pictures into one blog post. all business? all personal? some of both? none of either? and i don’t like picking “favourites” because the reality is that there are beautiful moments in every.single.session and to decide one is “better” than another…just doesn’t sit right with me. so what you’re going to get is a little bit of everything. a whole bunch of moments bundled up into 4 minutes of your day you will (hopefully) be happy to have witnessed.
2012 was full of “feeling”. i grieved this year. a lot. i cried alone and with others and alone again. i was conflicted in my spirit over why this life is the way it is and wondered how beautifully good people could suffer so much.
at the same time, i rejoiced. like there was no tomorrow. i got to witness the very first breaths of a sweet new life and be present as another was released back into the hands of her creator. i got to see a million first steps as married couples bounced down the aisle and see the tears of joy as their parents freed them to start their own families. i saw my own kids eager to start school and comforted them when they returned to me with scrapes and bruises of all kinds. i got to cuddle warm little bundles and wiggly toddlers and watch as moms and dads reluctantly let go of their child’s hands so they could take a few wobbly independent steps. maybe not all of that sounds like rejoicing to you, but to me it represents joy of every kind…what moulds us and shapes us and challenges us and gives us hope for the future. in a word: life. what a year.
(the song is paper house by lisa hannigan)
if you watch this and are stirred; if you see these people and wish it was you in those pictures; if you trust me to walk alongside you and the ones you love while you dance and play and enjoy each others company, then you are my client. you are the one i want to serve. call me. email me. just don’t be a stranger. i can’t wait to meet you.

i know i’ve been a little absent lately and for that, i apologize. don’t worry, i have still been working…editing and packaging summer weddings, taking some family sessions, prepping for next year, etc. etc.
but i have also been breathing. which feels nice because i kinda forgot that my body and mind and heart and soul actually need me to every once in awhile. so i might not have blogged that much, but i’m still here and i assure you am not going anywhere 🙂 (p.s. if you’d like a little insight on my day to day while the blog is quiet, you can find me on instagram @sharaleprang).
here are a few snaps from a sweet family i had the pleasure of meeting “down by the river” recently. don’t worry: they don’t live in a van.

the past couple of weeks have not been easy. i’ve seen and experienced grief. a sweet friend had to release her child into God’s arms before she had the chance to hold her in her own. i was invited into their story and was able to meet darling quinn. i was incredibly grateful while still being absolutely heartbroken as they trusted me to tell the story of her short life through pictures.
yet even in the midst of despair, there is grace and life. and a bigger picture. one that we can’t always see and certainly don’t understand, but it’s there. slowly unfolding before and behind our eyes, something greater than we could imagine or even hope for. this was a week where i clung to that hope and began to recognize what a gift it is that i get a glimpse of that bigger picture as i witness and document the stories of so many beautiful families.
and here is one. another family that has longed for a child prepared to meet theirs for the first time. daniel and carly welcomed oliver into their home on september 10th. though that was the first day he was officially theirs, they had carved an oliver shaped space in their hearts months before as they patiently waited for his arrival.
now daniel is a naturally smiley guy. but you ain’t seen nothing until you’ve seen the look on his face when he’s interacting with his boy. it didn’t matter how tired he was, his grin stretched so wide…we’re talking grand canyon/cheshire cat wide. so fun to see a daddy’s love.
what a gift you are to this darling child, as he is to you.

the halls are good friends of ours, our connection dating back to before kids, before marriage, basically to before we were as incredibly mature and good looking as we are now. steph and i have more recently bonded over our love for photography and all things thrift (or “used” as my husband would affectionately refer to it). being a photographer herself, steph has lots of pictures of them around home being a normal family. so they wanted to spice it up a little by dressing up and going to the beach.
little did i know that there was also another reason for choosing the beach…as we chatted through the session, she told me that they are planning to move to the rolling plains of landlocked saskatchewan! an incredible job opportunity has been offered to kevin and it gives them the chance to live some years closer to the other set of grandparents who are excited to watch their grandkids grow up.
i hope this did your “beach picture” dreams justice…we love you and will miss you!! if you live near saskatoon and need a wedding photographer, give steph a call!!
