the story goes something like this: dan and regan are good friends. dan, regan and dan’s sister kara decide to go to the cabin for the weekend. dan worries that kara and regan won’t get along and it will be awkward. kara and regan get along surprisingly well. so well that it eases all of dan’s fears and they have a great weekend together. which is where it ends, right? kind of. until dan sees a overly friendly text on kara’s phone weeks later…from regan. dan puts two and two together, realizing they have been seeing each other since, without him. dan has to step outside for a deep breath. or two. dan realizes that if kara and regan get together, it will actually be a good thing because then they will get to hang out even more. dan blesses relationship (because that’s what matters ;)…and so begins the happily ever after.
the one below on the far left is dan. he looks happy, right?
bay 4 will never be the same 🙂 all the best, regan & kara!

madisen and jeff. i think they’d be okay with me just saying it: things happened pretty fast for them. it seemed like i had just found out they were dating when i heard they were engaged. i’m sure they’ve had their fair share of sideways looks when people heard their entire relationship can be dated back to less than a year ago.
but here’s the thing: who cares!!!
you can’t tell me it’s too fast when you see this man’s eyes well up with tears as his bride walks down the aisle toward him (even though he just saw her 5 minutes ago!!). or when you see the look between them as they grip each other’s hands while it’s described what those hands will mean to them in the years to come. or when you see them give each other a hard time or laugh themselves silly while they beat the crap out of dora/diego pinatas (long story). or when you hear the affirmations from friends and family that the two of them together was so. clearly. right. it just was.
so cheers to you, my sweet friends…this is just the beginning!
thankfully the guys were super boring and always just stood there doing exactly what i asked them to.
jeff has spent the last year apprenticing a violin maker. as a surprise, his mentor had a professional violinist come to the reception and play the violin jeff made. it was pretty special.

the first time i met jaime and jon was at their engagement session and i don’t know if i’ve ever encountered such enthusiasm at a first meeting…especially from the future groom! they are clearly so excited to be taking this step toward marriage, their joy is positively contagious. i’m definitely looking forward to their summer wedding!

i was so conflicted about how to encapsulate an entire year of pictures into one blog post. all business? all personal? some of both? none of either? and i don’t like picking “favourites” because the reality is that there are beautiful moments in every.single.session and to decide one is “better” than another…just doesn’t sit right with me. so what you’re going to get is a little bit of everything. a whole bunch of moments bundled up into 4 minutes of your day you will (hopefully) be happy to have witnessed.
2012 was full of “feeling”. i grieved this year. a lot. i cried alone and with others and alone again. i was conflicted in my spirit over why this life is the way it is and wondered how beautifully good people could suffer so much.
at the same time, i rejoiced. like there was no tomorrow. i got to witness the very first breaths of a sweet new life and be present as another was released back into the hands of her creator. i got to see a million first steps as married couples bounced down the aisle and see the tears of joy as their parents freed them to start their own families. i saw my own kids eager to start school and comforted them when they returned to me with scrapes and bruises of all kinds. i got to cuddle warm little bundles and wiggly toddlers and watch as moms and dads reluctantly let go of their child’s hands so they could take a few wobbly independent steps. maybe not all of that sounds like rejoicing to you, but to me it represents joy of every kind…what moulds us and shapes us and challenges us and gives us hope for the future. in a word: life. what a year.
(the song is paper house by lisa hannigan)
if you watch this and are stirred; if you see these people and wish it was you in those pictures; if you trust me to walk alongside you and the ones you love while you dance and play and enjoy each others company, then you are my client. you are the one i want to serve. call me. email me. just don’t be a stranger. i can’t wait to meet you.

mike & jamie. the obvious place to start with these two would be the height thing, but that’s the thing: it’s obvious. the things that might not be so obvious to a passing stranger would be jamie’s grace and kindness or mike’s sense of humor and sensitivity. those are the things that make them a really great couple. the fact that he’s 10 feet tall and she’s smaller than a breadbox is just another factor that adds to their awesomeness.
we were all a little shocked to learn that jesus was such a close relative of the barnum family…
it was also grandpa’s birthday and their wedding anniversary, so we just had to throw in a few quick snaps of these two lovebirds.
i had such a fun time with you and your families and bridal party…i love that you all really know how to laugh! all the details of the reception were so sweet, from the white hydrangeas (my favorite flower) to the “family favorites” dessert table. the whole day was perfect!

melissa & derek: from dead serious to hysterical giggles in mere moments. when these two go to fort langley, they skip the shopping and head straight for the woods. with melissa leading the way. no shortage of adventure!
as i’m sure you guessed, they will be having an outdoor wedding up the mountainside this summer. looking forward to it!

so here we are again with mark and beth. weather/schedules prevented us from doing a full shoot the first time around, but we were stressed that the giant peach was going to deflate, so we crammed in a quick session with him, even though it was raining. oh ye of little faith! peachy survived a whole other week and from what i’m told, is still hovering until this day.
let me just tell you that these people are amazing. i started to get to know beth a couple years ago and my life has been blessed by her ever since. you know those super awesome drawings my website is littered with? you know that person who took my dream brand and made it a reality? the one who pretty much crawled into my brain, dragged out my ideas and put them on paper more beautifully than i could have imagined? oh yeah. that’s her. plus she’s so fun to hang out with and my kids love her. if you ever come over to my house, you’ll know why simon refers to her as “beff. elephant”.
and mark…talk about one of the sweetest most genuine guys. ever. i was suspicious of him at first, when beth told me about this mysterious fellow who lived across the country who would just fly in and out on a whim to see her. what if he has a whole other family in another city that you don’t know about? and why does he just disappear every time i think i’m going to meet him? ok, so he works for westjet. and he doesn’t have a whole other family. and he ended up moving to abbotsford and i got to know him and he’s actually really nice.
i’m glad you found one another. you two are so. so. good together. i am over the moon, as your friend AND your photographer, to walk this walk with you.

“we have like, two pictures of us together. and we’ve been dating for three years.” my favorite way to start a conversation! i’m not even joking. because 3 minutes into the session we had already increased that number by 500%.
one thing i loved about these two is they are super well rounded! they met in university and are both incredibly “book smart”, but then they would turn around and be like “do you mind if we climb that tree?” um, no. no i don’t.
the day before we were to meet, i got an e-mail from rose that said: ” So we had a bit of a contact lense solution disaster. Long story short is that Kenton has a really swollen eye and it is very red. This would not make for good photos. I am not sure how long it is going to take to heal.” close to the end of the session, kenton made reference to the time rose “sprayed poison in his eye” and i had to know the rest of the story. turns out kenton was trying a new contact solution. when he first put the contact in, his eye stung and assuming it was something on the contact, they removed it and rose (who is a chemistry teacher) proceeded to spray more of the solution into his eye to clean it out at which point kenton starts screaming. little did they know, this particular solution needs to be mixed and react BEFORE applying it to your contact. thankfully by the next morning, it was looking way better and we were still able to do photos. oh yeah, and he didn’t go blind. the two photos below are from while they were telling the story. rose looks sheepish and kenton…a little smug, i think!
