this family. i don’t know them well, but here is what i do know:
1. they are kind and generous* 2. they like to laugh, which is good because they have a two year old in the house and lord knows sometimes all you can do is laugh (so you don’t cry) 3. aforementioned 2 year old is awesome and likes to say yes to everything unless you ask him if he wants to go to bed 4. they have an amazing yellow plum tree in the backyard that yielded snacks for days for our family and jam that we are still working through from last year (*refer back to generous). you three are incredible and i’m so excited to see what the future holds for your family.

you know the saying “the shoemakers’ children go barefoot”? or maybe i’m just old. either way, sometimes photographers have the fewest pictures of themselves with their children because they are always the one behind the camera. my sweet friend jayme invited me into her home to document a little slice of her life with her daughter. i’m so pleased she made it a priority to step in front of the camera, as nerve wracking as that may be. the bond she and her little lady share is pretty special and i am so delighted to be able to reflect it back to her.

there’s something about seeing a mom smell her new baby…while newborns always carry a mysteriously sweet smell in those early days, it’s more than that. it’s like she’s breathing them in. it’s as close as she can get now that they are on the outside and while it’s still not quite close enough, it satisfies the senses and offers a deeper connection, if only for a moment. one of God’s little gifts to us mothers, i figure.

the thing about family photography (at least the way i approach it) is that you are forced to abandon nearly all the basic principles one would look for in an “ideal” shoot: perfect light, nice posing, straight lines, some sense of control, a plan…not to say that those won’t line up at some point, but with young children, you just can’t expect that they will. so what you’re left with is your camera (and the knowledge of how to use it), your instincts, your subjects and inevitably your sense of humor because if you’re like me, you’re going to end up in some awkward/potentially humiliating positions and you’re going to need to know how to laugh that off and keep going.
the beauty in all of that is that without the control, you are gifted with some of the most incredibly raw moments, with movement and play, with genuine emotion and interaction that you could never force or pose. and yeah, the horizon might not be straight because i was in the process of being attacked in a leaf fight and yeah the focus might be a little soft because mom was laughing as she tipped her son upside down and yeah they might be squinting a bit because they were busy spotting seagulls, but man do i FEEL it. these are the images i want to create for you. see more of this lovely family and their youngest’s birth story here!

you may recognize these folks from the many milestones i’ve been able to document in their lives. amber and bonner are servants – they are constantly caring for and loving others. it was such an honor to be able to serve them for once!

i met these two years ago through mutual friends, in fact, i think it was before they were even married. certainly before either of us had children. now here they are, 2 kids later celebrating 10 years – TEN YEARS. so awesome to be a witness to faithfulness.

with wedding season being in full swing, i rarely get to take a proper vacation in summer, but this year we decided to stay more local and head down to the seattle area to a house by the sea.this was the best decision we’ve made in awhile…it was so relaxed and beautiful and while we thought we would do more of exploring of the city, we were happy to just stay home and enjoy the view. my kids read books, collected crabs and played card games – so dreamy.
my sister lives down in portland with her husband and four children and we were so excited to host them for a few days. last fall, their family took a trip down to florida to meet the family of her two adopted boys. shortly after they came home, melissa asked if they would be open to coming to oregon to visit, so three of their siblings made the trek on their first plane ride across the country to live with them for 6 weeks. we are so grateful to their florida family for being willing to share them with us. please be sure to check out the other amazing women who are a part of the childhood unplugged project!

it’s hard for me to talk about this family without tearing up just a little…so thankfully i’m in the comfort of my own home as i write this and can cry all i want.
it’s a long story and a short one all at once, laced with the strength of love, the power of community and most of all the grace of God. this sweet baby is a miracle, one who was prayed for, cried over and dreamt of for years. so was his sister, born just shy of two years ago, a beautiful girl named quinn who i had the pleasure of meeting just after she arrived. and while these two siblings will never play together in the yard or squabble over legos they share an inexplicable bond. they are both loved deeply by the people who know their parents and they have both greatly impacted the world around them, even in their births. so we walk forward in celebration, remembering the past and living in hope for what the future holds for the zacharias family. welcome asher…we love you so much already!!

i love getting to see a couple who have set an incredible example in life and marriage for their kids. it’s amazing to witness the fruit of their commitment to each other and to see their children adopt many of the same values in their own families. that’s what you call a legacy. 5 family units, 10 kids 7 and under makes for absolutely beautiful chaos.
