so, pretty much everyone loves babies. even if they don’t like to hold babies, they like to look at them, coo at them, put sunglasses on them and laugh…you know how it goes. and of course, parents are always downright smitten with these little creatures. even the toughest of new dads tends to melt down into googoogaga talk at some point and even the most tired of new mamas won’t be able to keep their eyes off their child for more than a few moments. we expect it, right?
and while all of that is beautiful and touching to witness, let me tell you what really gets me every time. as these two exhausted people gaze at their sweet sleeping baby, sometimes for just a moment their weary eyes will meet and in that few seconds, so much love is exchanged. a mutual admiration and respect, a newfound depth of “knowing”; knowing that together they have participated in creating life, knowing that this life bonds them to one another like never before, knowing that while they have a huge responsibility laying before them in the form of a pink, chubby and completely dependant human being…they also have each other. this. this expression of family really and truly gets me every. time.
see what i mean?

you know those women who were always meant to be moms? i feel like katie is one of those people. as soon as i saw her son in her arms, it was like he had always been there…like they had always been a family. i was so excited to be welcomed into their home so i could help introduce their little man to the world.

in the midst of meeting brides and planning for the 2013 wedding season (oh my word, friends, next year’s weddings are going to be uhmaaaazing), i’ve had the chance to fit in a few sessions. one of them being this lovely family that met me on a dreary day to document the end of this second pregnancy and celebrate the expansion of their family.
now i know you’re going to see the pictures and say “how can this possibly be the ‘end’ of her pregnancy”, but it’s true folks. she’s a mere 5 weeks away and ladies (you must know that she is an absolutely delightful person and you are not allowed to hate her) she is still wearing regular jeans. i know, i know, it took me a few moments to come to grips with it too, but like i said she is wonderful which made it impossible to be mad 🙂

i know i’ve been a little absent lately and for that, i apologize. don’t worry, i have still been working…editing and packaging summer weddings, taking some family sessions, prepping for next year, etc. etc.
but i have also been breathing. which feels nice because i kinda forgot that my body and mind and heart and soul actually need me to every once in awhile. so i might not have blogged that much, but i’m still here and i assure you am not going anywhere 🙂 (p.s. if you’d like a little insight on my day to day while the blog is quiet, you can find me on instagram @sharaleprang).
here are a few snaps from a sweet family i had the pleasure of meeting “down by the river” recently. don’t worry: they don’t live in a van.

i got to know these sweet children when little miss m turned one last winter and it was so fun to catch up with them now and see how much they’ve both grown. and even though big bro would try to act tough at times, he has certainly reserved a soft spot in his heart for his little sister.

the past couple of weeks have not been easy. i’ve seen and experienced grief. a sweet friend had to release her child into God’s arms before she had the chance to hold her in her own. i was invited into their story and was able to meet darling quinn. i was incredibly grateful while still being absolutely heartbroken as they trusted me to tell the story of her short life through pictures.
yet even in the midst of despair, there is grace and life. and a bigger picture. one that we can’t always see and certainly don’t understand, but it’s there. slowly unfolding before and behind our eyes, something greater than we could imagine or even hope for. this was a week where i clung to that hope and began to recognize what a gift it is that i get a glimpse of that bigger picture as i witness and document the stories of so many beautiful families.
and here is one. another family that has longed for a child prepared to meet theirs for the first time. daniel and carly welcomed oliver into their home on september 10th. though that was the first day he was officially theirs, they had carved an oliver shaped space in their hearts months before as they patiently waited for his arrival.
now daniel is a naturally smiley guy. but you ain’t seen nothing until you’ve seen the look on his face when he’s interacting with his boy. it didn’t matter how tired he was, his grin stretched so wide…we’re talking grand canyon/cheshire cat wide. so fun to see a daddy’s love.
what a gift you are to this darling child, as he is to you.

the halls are good friends of ours, our connection dating back to before kids, before marriage, basically to before we were as incredibly mature and good looking as we are now. steph and i have more recently bonded over our love for photography and all things thrift (or “used” as my husband would affectionately refer to it). being a photographer herself, steph has lots of pictures of them around home being a normal family. so they wanted to spice it up a little by dressing up and going to the beach.
little did i know that there was also another reason for choosing the beach…as we chatted through the session, she told me that they are planning to move to the rolling plains of landlocked saskatchewan! an incredible job opportunity has been offered to kevin and it gives them the chance to live some years closer to the other set of grandparents who are excited to watch their grandkids grow up.
i hope this did your “beach picture” dreams justice…we love you and will miss you!! if you live near saskatoon and need a wedding photographer, give steph a call!!

on the move. i think that is the best way to describe our time together. just when we were getting settled, it was back on the street. up stairs. down stairs. in trees. on benches. pressing buttons. looking in windows. knocking on doors (p.s. if anyone in downtown chilliwack got nicky-nicky-nine doored early evening last week, sorry about that. it was probably us). this is going to be one busy mama, but she sure seems ready. i love it.

ok. so i will be completely honest. when tricia contacted me and told me she had 4 boys between the ages of 4 and 10, i was a little frightened. then she told me she wanted something “fun and lighthearted” and that, my friends, was music to my ears. i knew we had to go somewhere that the boys could explore and run around and not feel cooped up in “cheese” mode.
well i tell ya, these boys showed up and they were so amazing – i don’t know what kind of treats she promised them, but i hope they got lots. because they rocked it.
we even made a friend…of the animal variety. apparently this little guy was hungry and needed to find a way back home. the boys were so sweet and helped him back into his natural habitat.
so if you happen to be in the park in a few months and see a lovely little butterfly float by, you’ll know a bit of his story. and you can thank the griffioen boys.

mandi & kevin celebrate their fifth anniversary this year and what better way to commemorate than to haul out the dress and run around in a field! photography wasn’t as much of a priority when they got married, so mandi was really excited to get some nice pictures of them together…and of course she looked beautiful in the dress(after two kids, nonetheless)!
after a quick change, the kids came to join us. what a sweet little family!
it’s such a joy to watch your family grow!
